New milestone: Solar energy became the EU’s leading power source last month
Despite the breakthrough, fossil fuel use in the power sector rose by 13% in the first half of the year

14 July 2025

According to Ember’s monthly electricity data, solar became the EU’s largest source of electricity for the first time in June, marking a significant milestone in the region’s transition from fossil fuels to clean energy.

Solar accounted for 22.1% of the EU’s electricity in June, generating 45.4 TWh. This surge was “largely driven by ongoing solar installations in recent years, combined with periods of hot, sunny weather.” As a result, thirteen EU countries, including Romania, set new records for solar power generation.

Also noteworthy, clean energy sources held the second and third spots: nuclear followed closely with a 21.8% share, while wind overtook gas, accounting for 15.8% of the EU’s electricity mix. Fossil fuels made up just 23.6%—the second-lowest share ever—slightly above the record low of 22.9% set in May 2024.

However, despite the record renewable output last month, fossil fuel generation increased by 13% in the first half of the year, driven by higher gas consumption due to “lower levels of hydro and wind generation,” while power demand rose by 2.2%.
